About Redpoint Perspective and David Gilman
Rock climbers “redpoint” a project when they complete it without failing. No matter how many times they have tried and failed, a finish without failing is celebrated as a redpoint. This is because every try teaches us something new. Every setback is a learning opportunity, and failing simply builds our knowledge for the next attempt. We grow and develop by being open to experiences, experimenting, and not always meeting our goal.
David is currently a UX Manager at Google, responsible for leading user design and research for internal tooling. Throughout the pandemic, he underwent a significant shift in his career focus, transitioning away from software development to prioritize people development instead. This shift led him to become a leader in manager excellence within Google, where he recognized the profound impact that personal growth can have on an organization's success.
Aside from his professional endeavors, David is also an enthusiastic volunteer EMT. Through this experience, he has come to appreciate the importance of compassion and self-compassion, particularly in high-pressure environments like responding to 911 emergencies. He believes that these qualities are equally vital in the workplace for people managers and leaders.
Driven by his insights and passion, David founded Redpoint Perspective, an initiative aimed at sharing his perspective on personal growth and compassion with a broader audience. As a coach, he draws on his current role as a UX Manager, as well as a wealth of multidisciplinary experience, spanning from behind-the-scenes work on Broadway to marketing and advertising for some of the world's largest brands. This diverse background informs his coaching approach, as he is committed to guiding his clients' growth and development as not just professionals, but also as individuals.
Much like a photograph slowly developing in a dark room, David realizes that everyone’s picture is already there - it just needs to be brought to life. Developmental coaching is based on an understanding of how change happens and is a process of discovery between David and his client. As a coach, David doesn’t have all the answers. What David has is the ability to guide his clients to the answers by unblocking them from themselves.
Coaching engagements begin with a chemistry call to ensure that clients are comfortable with David and ready to do the work. From there, David uses a proven methodology to support clients in defining goals, uncovering challenges, building and executing a plan, and finally concluding the engagement. While David does offer one-off conversations and long-term coaching, most engagements unfold over four to six months.
